Cuban Missile Crisis
In 1962, the Soviet Union began building secret missile bases in Cuba. Nikita Khrushchev’s idea was to place these missiles in Cuba to prevent another U.S. sponsored invasion. President Kennedy got wind of this plan and stated that any attack made by Cuba would be considered a direct attack from the USSR. he also placed a naval blockade on Cuba to stop the building of these bases. Khrushchev promised that he would stop the building of these bases as long as the U.S. refrained from attacking Cuba. The United States agreed.
