Vietnam War
The Vietnam War began in 1957 between the communist North Vietnam and non-communist South Vietnam. The U.S. again, wanted to prevent the spread of communism. So we pledged to back up South Vietnam. Although, we didn't have much to work with because the South Vietnamese government was not very strong. This War was very controversial among the U.S. though. This was the beginning of the "Peace not war" era. So people were really upset with the United states involvement in this war. There were many cases when the young men would refuse to fight and refuse to be drafted. They would run off and hide or they would use politics to get out of going to war. Besides this, this was the first war that black people and white people fought side by side. Which was a big step for the civil rights movement. The Vietnam War was also the first war that the United States admitted defeat. it was the first war we lost.
